CounterPulse Festival Identity

CounterPulse, a 25-year old San Francisco mainstay for Bay Area performing arts, decided to launch a festival to showcase their unique curation and incubation of queer performance and discourse. The festival was positioned to be a comparable West Coast version of large alternative performance festivals that our common on the East Coast and Europe.

We zeroed in on the word “bent” as the visual anchor—bent as in queer, and bent as in mind-bending. The wavy box line logo references this, as well as referencing the container that space creates for art and ideas. The visual systems needed to be in sync with CounterPulse’s overall brand, but distinct enough to stand out as a new initiative.

The inaugural year of the CounterPulse Festival was a dynamic five days of performance, conversation, and radical celebration, and received critical acclaim, all shows sold out and the events received numerous press features.

In my scope: Brand Strategy, Design, Storytelling + Copy, Digital Marketing
